Chapter 19

News of the massacre went national.

Images of the cordoned-off motel kept looping through the morning news. By afternoon the victims were revealed to be two bikers from Texas. They had registered under false names but a trace on their motorcycle plates showed they were Fredrick Munson and Alfred Ashton both with long rap sheets for violent crimes. The identity of the female victims was yet to be determined.

Case closed Les thought, watching an in-depth TV report. Bikers, drugs, gangs, cartels, same old story. No mention of the cemetery murders on yesterday’s news. But Les knew the gruesome executions were similar to those of the hairy creatures he had been tracking.

Correction, who were tracking him.

Les made a note to find another place to stay. For all of Melody’s professed love and loyalty she refused to let him sleep over at her place.

Women.

Totally uninhibited sexually Melody was quite reserved when it came to her past or her privacy. Now that they were working together that might pose a problem. He shared this place with Dave…

Les stopped short, still unsettled by what happened to his partner.

Then he remembered. “The bartender at Minny’s. The dude with the black nails, Carson. Les decided to pay him a visit.

A call to the hospital assured him that Dave was recuperating but still needed rest. Jennifer was at his side.

Right now nobody’s at my side except Mrs Glock, he thought ruefully.

A new side light on the Motel Massacre as it was now known, caught his attention. The newscaster announced that a third biker had registered with the victims but had left the scene. Investigators believe he was in another room at the time of the killings.

A third biker. Les filed the information away. It was too soon to visit the crime scene. The Half Note Motel would be crawling with cops and reporters.

It was still early in the day so he checked his emails before he went out for something to eat. On impulse he went to the drop they’d set up with Director Easton and found a request to meet.

Les replied immediately and Easton chose T-Coons. It was one of Dave’s favorite spots in Lafayette. He wondered if the choice had any significance.

“It’s short ribs Tuesday,” Easton confided as they scanned the specials on the lunch menu, “and I’m a sucker for the sausage biscuits.”

“I’m a sucker period. Didn’t you approve my request for personal leave?”

“Sure did. But you’re still on the case aren’t you?”

It wasn’t a question.

“You want me to lay off right?”

“Wrong. I want to help you— unofficially of course,” He slid his menu across the table. “Look underneath.”

Les pulled out a large envelope and put in his lap.

“What is it?”

“I decided to have our guys find out if the Fairmont where you’re staying has street surveillance cameras. Turns out they do.”

“You got a video of the attack?”

“Not quite. That part was out of range. But there’s a fairly decent image of that van you reported. And the driver.”

Les slipped two digital photos of a van parked at the curb between the parking lot and the motel.
